Matryoshka dolls, or nested wooden dolls, which were targeted late last year by Riga’s Vice Mayor Edvards Ratnieks, have disappeared from Riga Central Market, but are freely available in souvenir shops right under the nose of Riga City Council. Inc. verified this on site after a market seller drew attention to this injustice.
She complained that the municipal leadership “has nothing to do and only knows how to solve non‑existent problems, for example, banning the sale of wooden dolls, even though these items are available right in the center of Riga.” The seller pointed out that the reconstruction of the market pavilions is progressing slowly and traders have no clarity about when and how they will have to relocate, while the Riga City Council leadership is busy regulating the product range.
Meanwhile, as Inc. confirmed, matryoshka dolls can be bought at the Amber Line amber and souvenir shop on the corner of Krāmu and Tirgoņu Streets next to Riga City Council, as well as in one of the two souvenir shops on Town Hall Square, at Kungu Street 1. It is also amusing that the company Amber Line, which sells Latvian amber products, souvenirs characteristic of Riga and Latvia, and also matryoshka dolls displayed in the shop window, belongs to a Russian citizen, Aleksandrs Ratkevičs.
