By 2028, Agrova Baltics will switch to 100% cage-free egg production. A new investment program worth 30 million euros will be launched in Alūksne

The Latvian food production group AS “Agrova Baltics” (part of the “Agrova International” holding) has decided to switch to 100% barn-laid egg production at the “Alūksne Poultry Farm”. The company plans to do this by the end of 2028, thereby becoming the first egg producer in the Baltic states to complete this transition in full. The decision was made in response to rapidly growing demand in export markets and retail chains for cage-free eggs.

AS “Agrova Baltics” founder and Chairman of the Board Jurijs Adamovičs emphasizes: “We are building an export-oriented, Europe-wide egg protein business, where our main clients even today are international retail chains with a broad presence across Europe. These market participants are rapidly switching to cage-free eggs, and this category is becoming the new industry standard.

“Agrova Baltics” is already the leader in the Baltics by share of barn-laid eggs, which reach about 80% of total production. Egg production in Alūksne takes place at five facilities, four of which already provide cage-free egg production. The remaining barn is planned to be rebuilt by the end of 2028, completing the transition from cage systems to modern cage-free production technologies.

J. Adamovičs adds: “We clearly see that this transition will be challenging in the local market in Latvia, where consumer purchasing power is still a significant factor. This means that in the short term we may also face a certain loss of market share. Therefore, we will ensure a gradual transition, also maintaining more affordable product solutions for the local market over the next two years. At the same time, we see that the entire European industry is moving in this direction, and as a responsible producer we consider it our duty to adapt in good time to these structural changes and continue to strengthen our position in the European market.”

30 million euro investment program and creation of new jobs in the region

In addition to modernizing the existing infrastructure, “Agrova Baltics” is launching a 30 million euro investment program in Alūksne, aimed at significantly expanding and developing the company’s production platform.

The program foresees the construction of three new poultry facilities, as well as substantial modernization of the egg grading and packaging center, expansion of the feed production plant, and development of organic fertilizer production. In addition, investments will be directed towards improving related infrastructure, creating a fully integrated, modern production complex.

The project is closely linked to “Agrova’s” zero-waste strategy, ensuring efficient use of all by-products throughout the value chain and strengthening the company’s commitment to sustainable and responsible production practices.

The investment program is supported by the company’s strategic partner “Accession Capital Partners” (ACP), providing additional capital to accelerate growth and expand exports. The new plants and modernization work will significantly increase production capacity, create new jobs in Alūksne, and promote the economic development of the Vidzeme region.

The construction of the three new poultry facilities is scheduled to be completed in the first half of 2027. After the project is implemented, the share of cage-free eggs will reach approximately 90% of total production capacity, further strengthening “Agrova Baltics’” leading position in the region.

“Agrova” is a European agri-food brand and group whose main shareholder is “Agrova International”. The group specializes in egg production and processing, as well as in the development of egg products and functional nutrition products.  The “Agrova” group was established in 2025 in Riga, Latvia, by entrepreneur Jurijs Adamovičs with the aim of developing a globally competitive egg and egg product production platform, based on Latvia’s agricultural excellence, science, and responsible practices across the entire value chain. At present, Agrova operates production facilities in Latvia and the United Kingdom, ensuring sustainable supplies to retail chains, the public catering sector, and food industry companies throughout Europe.
