The reality of the labor market in Latvia: signs of systemic discrimination based on age and qualifications

Despite the growing number of job advertisements and publicly offered bonuses, the actual situation in the labour market in Latvia indicates significant structural problems. The results of the conducted study point to possible systematic discrimination against highly qualified specialists, especially in the 40 to 50 age group.

Both in public administration and in the private sector, there are signs that may indicate the implementation of merely formal selection processes and non-compliance with the principle of equal treatment. Candidates with higher education and substantial professional experience are often excluded from the selection process based on subjective and unfounded criteria, including references to excessive qualification or potential competition.

Within the framework of the study, by analysing the experience of at least 20 candidates, it was found that in 90% of cases employers do not provide any response to submitted applications, while in the remaining cases only formal rejection letters are given. None of the candidates involved in the study were invited to a job interview.

These data highlight the issue of the risk of discrimination in the labour market and the need to ensure a transparent, fair, and objectively criteria-based staff selection process, in compliance with the applicable regulatory framework and the principle of equal treatment.
