A “non-hallucinating” artificial intelligence assistant for teachers has been created

A platform designed specifically for the learning process has been developed – the tool Letonikas Skola, where teachers can create their own learning assistants and equip them with the necessary information by uploading digital versions of textbooks, literary works or other materials. Using this content, the learning assistant can quiz students, answer their questions, prepare self-assessment tests, and also evaluate their results, informs the assistant’s developer Tilde.

Letonikas Skola can both compare selected test answer options and read and understand answers submitted in free form. The assistant can be adapted to students of different ages – it can work with materials from various school subjects, shorten long plays and even explain concepts in simpler language.

The shortage and overload of teachers has long been one of the biggest problems in Latvia’s education system. At the same time, teachers are increasingly expected to provide an individualized approach to students and to introduce modern teaching methods. However, achieving this requires a significant investment of time and energy, as well as clarity about which safe tools should be used at all.

“In their daily work teachers often lack time not only to develop new content, but even to rest and recover their strength. This means that there are often not enough resources left to discover and master modern tools for use in the teaching process. Therefore, our goal was to create a simple, safe and easily accessible tool that offers concrete and practical support in everyday work,” says Letonika.lv head Anita Vasiļjeva.

Today, students often use various commercial AI tools in the learning process, but the answers they provide may be inaccurate, contain propaganda or so‑called AI hallucinations. This can hinder the learning process and lead to misunderstanding of the study material. In contrast, Letonikas Skola works only with content selected by the teacher, ensuring that the assistant’s answers are reliable and aligned with the curriculum.

“One of the main advantages of this solution is the control given to the teacher over the AI assistant. The teacher chooses what content the assistant will work with and can be sure that it will not confuse students with questionable facts from unverified sources. When drawing information from commercial generative AI tools, unfortunately one still encounters inaccuracies and dubious interpretations. Letonikas Skola works only with content selected by the teacher, so if a topic is not in the materials, the assistant honestly admits that it cannot provide information about it,” explains A. Vasiļjeva.

She adds that more than a hundred teachers have already tried this AI tool, and interest in the new tool is growing: “Letonikas Skola is definitely not yet another burden on the learning process, but a genuinely useful tool that will make lesson preparation easier. It is a safe and private environment where the teacher can freely experiment, because no one else can see the content they create.”

The learning content is created by the teacher in their Letonikas Skola account, and students access the prepared topic through an internet link sent by the teacher. The platform allows students to learn the topic in dialogue with the assistant, freely ask questions and receive answers that are based directly on the materials provided by the teacher. The assistant can also check students’ texts and correct grammatical mistakes, helping to improve both their knowledge and writing skills.
