5.4 million euros will be invested in expanding the Spilva production plant

The food production company Orkla Latvija will invest 5.4 million euros in the sauces and ready-made meals brand Spilva production plant in Spilve, Babīte. The extensive investment plan includes expanding the production building and modernizing the main production lines to ensure a rational production flow and automation capabilities, as well as to increase production speed and reduce staff workload.

“Production of Spilva’s most popular product types – mayonnaise and sauces – had practically reached its ceiling, or a 90% line load, achieved thanks to a significant increase in exports. The plant has proven itself excellently and has become strategically important in the Orkla company network. Thanks to these investments, Spilva will not only solve production capacity challenges, but will also continue to grow volumes and keep pace with industry modernization, taking the leading role in sauce production within the group,” says Orkla Latvija Chairman of the Board Toms Didrihsons.

The investment project is planned to be implemented within a year and a half, dedicating approximately 9 months to expanding the plant and another 9 months to relocating, modernizing, and automating the production lines. The project is expected to be completed in mid-2027. The project will be implemented with the support of the European Union, as well as own investments.

“This will be the largest growth project for the Spilva plant since 2008, when a new production block was opened. For current and potential Spilva employees, it will mean confidence in stable and long-term job opportunities at the largest and most modern plant of its kind in the Baltics. For Spilva consumers – confidence that their favorite products will continue to make their way to store shelves, maintaining high quality and continuing work on sustainable and efficient production. Meanwhile, for our food industry this is proof that we can be a manufacturer of strategic importance not only in the Baltics, but also in several European and Scandinavian countries, continuing to make substantial investments in production development in Latvia,” adds Toms Didrihsons.

The Spilva plant has been located in Babīte since 1992, when it started operations as a small canning workshop, and over time it has experienced strong growth, developing as part of the Orkla group since 2004. Today, the Spilva plant is one of the most modern in the Baltic states. The Spilva brand range includes several hundred different products in seven categories of meals and meal accompaniments: tomato sauces and ketchups, mayonnaises, sauces, canned vegetables, spices, jams and desserts, horseradish and mustard, soups and main courses. Spilva produces more than 17,000 tons of products per year, and the brand’s products are the first choice of Latvian consumers in several categories; moreover, they have also found their fans in export markets – approximately 50% of the output is exported.
