An additional tax is being prepared for imports from Russia

By referring to committees the Economic Security Tax Law initiated by the National Alliance, the Saeima is beginning work on a new tax of 30% to be applied to goods from Russia.

According to the proposal, the tax would have to be applied to goods that are sold for the first time or used to ensure economic activity, production, or own consumption. In the draft law, Russia is not mentioned by name; instead, the list of countries or “high-risk countries” to which this tax would apply will have to be drawn up by the Cabinet of Ministers.

The new tax is intended, among other things, to be applied to vegetables, textiles, and animal or vegetable fats.

Artūrs Butāns, who introduced the draft law at the Saeima sitting, stated: “In Latvia there are a number of companies that have withdrawn from their previous operations in Russia, have given up profits amounting to millions, and have successfully found other, safer export markets where they can earn these funds. Unfortunately, a small proportion of companies have not done this and are continuing this cooperation with Russia’s bloody war economy. And this has been encouraged also, let us be honest, by the lack of decisions by the legislator, such as setting specific measures for those who continue cooperation, or specific competitive advantages for those who have stopped it. As a result, imports from Russia still remain stable, albeit with a slight downward trend, but still stable and, according to CSP data, exceed 125 million per year. The Economic Security Tax proposed by the National Alliance provides for a 30 percent tax on goods and services of Russian origin, applying it to the first transaction in the territory of Latvia.”

73 Saeima deputies voted in favor of referring the draft law to committees, while 14 voted against. Those voting against were predominantly representatives of the party Latvia First.
