In 2025, Latvia registered the highest number of newly established companies and merchants in the last six years. According to data from the Register of Enterprises, a total of 10,445 new companies and merchants were founded, which is 12.07% more than in 2024, surpassing the 10,000 threshold for the first time since 2019, according to the data compiled by the bank Citadele.
Last year, 183,991 active companies and merchants were registered in Latvia. The most popular form of business activity remains the limited liability company (SIA), which accounts for more than half of all active companies. At the same time, the popularity of low-capital SIAs continues to grow – this form already makes up 22.51% of the total number of companies and merchants. In 2025, the number of active low-capital SIAs increased by 7.31%, or by 2,820 entities.
“The data of bank Citadele also reflect the rise in business activity. In 2025, almost 24% more newly established companies opened an account with Citadele than a year earlier. The data show that new entrepreneurs most often operate in wholesale and retail trade, the transport and storage sector, as well as construction – in total, these three sectors represent 46% of all newly established companies,” says Vaidas Žagūnis, member of the management board of the bank responsible for corporate client services.
The bank’s observations show that the most important financial services for new companies are the provision of everyday payments, payment cards and POS terminals, especially for companies operating in the retail segment.
“Taking into account the increase in business activity, the bank has developed special conditions for companies registered within the last 12 months. During their first year of operation, newly established companies have access to a free business package and a POS terminal without rental fees, as well as access to solutions from cooperation partners that help cover the most essential initial needs of the company,” notes Žagūnis.
The cooperation partners have been selected, taking into account the relevance of their services specifically at the initial stage of a company’s operations – in accounting, legal solutions, technologies and day-to-day operational support, so that new entrepreneurs have access in one place to the most practically necessary support instruments during their first year of operation.
