Elenger launches its first electricity storage battery system

This week in Latvia, Elenger’s first battery energy storage system (BESS) began operating, connected to Elenger’s solar park in Nīca, near Liepāja. The entire complex can provide green energy for 1,500 households per day or for charging electric vehicles to cover 50,000 km.

Elenger, the largest private energy company in the Baltics and Finland region, has invested 2 million euros in the project, and the BESS provides 4 megawatts (MW) of power and 8 megawatt-hours (MWh) of storage capacity. With this amount of green energy, it is possible in one day to supply approximately 1,500 households or charge several electric vehicles that together could travel up to 50,000 kilometers.

“Battery energy storage systems provide significant benefits both for electricity producers and consumers, as well as for the entire energy system as a whole, promoting market efficiency and sustainable development. For example, BESS helps to reduce electricity prices. Namely, battery energy storage systems make it possible to store electricity when it is cheaper or produced in surplus and use it when demand and prices are high, thereby reducing costs for both households and companies. BESS also promotes an increasing share of green energy in the power supply network, ensuring that residents of Latvia, including Elenger customers, can use more and more renewable energy,” explains SIA Elenger Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board Dāvis Skulte.

“BESS also makes it possible to improve grid stability by supplying stored green energy to the network at times when demand exceeds supply or unexpected power outages occur. This means that BESS systems also play an important role in balancing the electricity market, stabilizing the grid and ensuring a rapid response to supply and demand fluctuations. Furthermore, BESS is an essential tool for restoring grid operation after grid failures – they provide the necessary initial power to restart grid operation in situations where traditional energy sources are not available or are limited. Thus, BESS not only reduces the risk of power supply interruptions, but also speeds up the restoration of power supply, ensuring greater overall security and stability of electricity supply,” adds D. Skulte. 

As reported previously, last June Elenger opened its first solar power plant in Latvia, located in Nīca. The investment in this project amounts to 2.5 million euros, and the nearly 7,000-panel solar park produces 4.5 gigawatt-hours (GWh) per year.

The Elenger group started solar energy production in 2019, when together with a partner company it opened what was then the largest solar park complex in Estonia – in Pärnu, where 13,000 solar panels with a total capacity of 4.7 megawatts were installed. Since then, Elenger has built several dozen solar parks across Estonia, as well as two solar power plants in Latvia – in Nīca and Olaine. The Olaine power plant started operating this April.

Elenger is the largest private energy company in the Baltics and Finland region, serving more than 450,000 customers. Elenger’s activities cover the entire energy spectrum – from trading on energy exchanges and transactions with international partners to selling energy to end consumers, as well as developing energy infrastructure and producing energy. 

Elenger offers its customers natural gas of Western origin and renewable biomethane, and manages gas distribution networks in Estonia, Latvia, and Poland with a total length of 9,000 km. The company also sells electricity, including green electricity generated in the company’s solar parks. Elenger is actively engaged in international energy trading. The group employs more than 1,000 people. Last year, the company’s turnover reached one billion euros. Elenger’s sole owner is the investment company Infortar, which is listed on the Baltic Main List of the Nasdaq Tallinn stock exchange.
