In the next five years, the Latvian telecommunications company Tet plans to become a “unicorn”, that is, to reach a company valuation of one billion euros, the company’s Chairman of the Management Board Uldis Tatarčuks said at the “Tet Vision 2030” presentation event.
“Tet is Latvia’s digital heart, beating with values, responsibility, and a desire to help. We combine humanity with technology to create solutions that are vibrant and people-friendly. Our goal – to become the leader in digital innovation and security in the Baltics by 2030 – is not just an ambition, but a real step, based on our knowledge and experience,” said Tatarčuks.
It is planned that the company will pay particular attention to the development of future data center infrastructure, cybersecurity solutions, and quantum-safe technology, becoming a leading provider of digital security, cloud services, and artificial intelligence solutions in the Baltics.
The company already has a large data center business not only in Latvia, but also in other European countries, such as Germany and Ukraine. This includes six data centers with 450 racks, and exports account for 62% of the data center business, said Tet Commercial Director Edgars Grandāns. In Latvia, Tet maintains a strong position with a 41% market share and stable growth – an average of 15% per year.
The company’s newest project in this area is the DC7 data center in Salaspils, with a total investment of 30 million euros, providing state-of-the-art energy efficiency solutions and heat reuse in cooperation with “Salaspils Siltums”. The company will soon celebrate the topping-out ceremony for this data center.
In the next five years, Tet will also devote increased attention to cybersecurity and quantum-safe technologies, with plans to invest more than five million euros in their research over three years. The company’s Chief Technology Officer Dmitrijs Ņikitins explained that since the appearance of ChatGPT, the number of phishing emails has increased by 4,151%, which means that work on artificial intelligence solutions and security is one of the main priorities.
To strengthen data connectivity with the Baltic states, increasing the resilience of the country’s critical infrastructure against external threats, Tet, in a consortium with Tallinn University of Technology and other partners in the Baltic states, will ensure 5G coverage along the Via Baltica highway within the 5G Baltics project. “Tet ensures that Latvia is an integral part of Europe, not a remote point that may be left without communications in a time of crisis. Our goal by 2030 is to maintain our position as the most resilient network in Latvia, capable of withstanding any external threat, including under hybrid warfare conditions,” emphasizes U. Tatarčuks.
Every day Tet’s technology systems face an average of three DDoS attacks, and once every two weeks – ransomware incidents in which ransom payments are demanded in cryptocurrency. To strengthen the cybersecurity of public and private companies, Tet is working on the creation of a national quantum network that provides the highest data transmission security standards. Work continues on building quantum communications infrastructure with the Baltic states, Poland, and Germany. In the future, a security network of this scale will make it possible to ensure the necessary digital security in the financial, healthcare, telecommunications, and defence sectors.
